The Director of Communication & Marketing will develop and implement all communication and marketing strategies for the School of Professional & Extended Studies (SPExS), American University's multi-disciplinary life-long learning unit with 200 partnerships around the United States and abroad . The incumbent will be responsible for creating a single, coherent brand and image to advance the School's enrollment, business development, and marketing goals.

The Director will support the School's diverse external and internal communication needs, crafting effective relationships with relevant units at American University such as University Marketing and Communications and the Office of Information Technology. S/he will also assist with special events management and alumni relations.

This is an excellent position for a creative problem-solver who enjoys the challenges of a start-up environment, is accustomed to working with many; diverse stakeholders but perhaps more limited resources.

Qualifications: 

Educational Requirements: A Bachelor's degree is required. A Master's degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience is preferred.

Minimum Requirements:
• At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in higher education marketing, advertising, public relations, or related area with a proven track record of developing and executing marketing, communications, and social media plans
• Strong interpersonal and written communication, presentation, and problem solving skills
• Ability to apply market research and audience segmentation data, strategies and tactics
• Excellent attention to detail with proven ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced, high pressure environment
• Ability to work in a collaborative, multicultural environment with diverse constituencies
• Events planning experience
• Familiarity with the organizational structure of major colleges and universities and the challenges specific to higher education communications

Preferred Requirements:
• Graphic and/or social design experience
• Experience in both corporate and non-profit and international settings, and with student- oriented marketing is a plus
